HomeServe Service Plan

Many homeowners aren't aware that the exterior electrical lines and components on their property are their responsibility.  If a breakdown in this line occurs, it is up to the member to find an electrician and pay the repair costs.  With their exterior electrical coverage plan, HomeServe is available to help.  Below are details regarding this new partnership and plans available to PEC members.

Who is HomeServe?

HomeServe is a leading provider of home repair service plans that protect homeowners against the expense and inconvenience of unexpected repairs by providing affordable coverage and quality service.  They work with reputable, local technicians to ensure a prompt response time to service calls.

HomeServe is a National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Partner with an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.

What do they do?

HomeServe's affordable repair service plans cover parts and labor to repair critical electrical, heating, cooling, and water systems.  The plans provide repair service in an emergency through the company's 24/7 repair hotline by local, licensed, and insured technicians with no deductibles or call-out fees and a one-year guarantee on all covered repairs. 

When an emergency occurs, homeowners contact HomeServe via the company's repair hotline.  A HomeServe specialist will collect information from the homeowner and have a local contractor contact the homeowner within one hour of the initial call to arrange an appointment.  HomeServe also follows up with homeowners to measure customer satisfaction.

What is People's Energy's relationship with HomeServe?

We have partnered with HomeServe so that HomeServe can offer repair plans to our members to help protect them from the worry of covered home emergencies.

Who is eligible for coverage?

An owner of a residential single structure that is not intended to be moved may be eligible for coverage.  This includes single family homes (inclusive of manufactured housing) and townhomes.  Recreational vehicles and properties used for commercial purposes are not eligible.  Your property is not eligible if you are aware of any pre-existing conditions, defects or deficiencies with your exterior electrical line prior to enrollment or have an electrical services entrance rated less than 80 amps.  If your entire exterior electrical line is shared with any third party or covered by a homeowners', condominium, or like association, then you are not eligible.

Is a member obligated to purchase coverage from HomeServe?

No, coverage is optional.

What am I responsible for?

As a homeowner, you are responsible for some of your exterior electrical line components.

Does my homeowners insurance cover this?

Most basic homeowners insurance policies do not cover repair or replacement due to normal wear and tear of exterior electrical components.

What should I know about this coverage?

What's covered: Coverage provides, up to the benefit amount, for the covered cost to repair or replace the following components of an overhead or underground exterior electrical line, for which you have sole responsibility, from your utility's responsibility to the external wall of your home, if the component has failed or is creating a hazardous condition due to normal wear and tear, not accident or negligence: weatherhead, insulator, riser, meter base, service entrance conductor, and permanent high voltage electrical wiring.

Not covered: Repairs to damage arising from the disconnection or interruption to the main electrical supply; transformers; repair of low voltage wiring; generators; non-utility supplied power and/or lines; appliances such as pool heaters; and damage from accidents, negligence or otherwise caused by you, others, or unusual circumstances.  The meter that measures the amount of electricity used is not covered by this plan, but it may be covered by your local utility.  Additional exclusions apply.  To see full Terms and Conditions with complete coverage and exclusion details prior to enrolling call 1-833-334-1874 or go to www.homeserveusa.com.

What technicians does HomeServe work with?

HomeServe has a rigorous recruiting and approval process for technicians.  In order to remain in the network, technicians must continuously perform to high standards.  They are all licensed, insured, and are local in your area to ensure prompt response time to your service calls.

What quality of repair can I expect?

Local, licensed and insured electricians perform covered repairs, which are guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for one year.

What if my repairs cost more than the benefit amount?

HomeServe sets out a benefit amount based on current average costs for these types of repairs and works with reputable technicians who provide fair pricing on labor and materials.  In the event that there is a repair that costs more than the benefit amount, you would be responsible for that cost.

When can I make a service call?

Your plan starts the day your form is processed, and there is an initial 30-day waiting period before you can make a service call, giving you 11 months of coverage during the first year.  Upon renewal/reactivation (if applicable), you will not be subject to a waiting period.

Why is there a 30-day waiting period?

There is a waiting period to prevent service calls on pre-existing conditions and help keep coverage affordable.  The waiting period is only applied to your first year of coverage.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel within 30 days of your start date for a full refund (or less any claims paid if cancelled at any time after renewal/reactivation, where applicable).  Cancellations after the first 30 days will be effective at the end of the then-current billing month, and you will be entitled to a pro-rata refund less any claims paid (where applicable).  You may also contact HomeServe to cancel if you find your utility or municipality provides similar coverage to you at no charge, and you will receive a refund less any claims paid (where applicable).

What is the term of my service agreement?

Your coverage is based on an annual contract.  For E-Z Pay, credit card, or debit card customers: regardless of the payment frequency you select, your service agreement will be automatically renewed annually on the same payment terms selected, at the then-current renewal price.

What is E-Z Pay?

E-Z Pay is a paperless and stress-free way to pay for your coverage.  Payments are automatically debited from the bank/checking account of your choice as your payment becomes due at no additional cost.

Can I request not to receive information from HomeServe?

How often is there damage to a member's lines, meter socket, or other equipment they may be responsible for?

It does not happen very often, however members should consider the age and condition of their electrical service.  It is also important to consider site-specific chronic (freeze/thaw cycles, installation manner, etc.) and acute (unknown damage from digging, moles/gophers, etc.) issues that could cause underground line to fail. It can often be one of these types of issues rather than the line reaching the end of its scheduled lifespan that cause the wire to fail.
